FAQs

What is the difference between a globe bulb and a globe shade?

A globe bulb is the light source itself and screws directly into a standard socket. A globe shade is a separate glass cover that surrounds a bulb. Hangout Lighting offers decorative globe bulbs as well as glass globe shades for pendant lights and chandeliers.

What is a neckless globe shade?

A neckless globe is a round glass shade without a traditional narrow fitter opening or visible neck. The socket sits inside the globe, while a metal globe cover holds the shade in place from above. This creates a clean, nearly uninterrupted sphere

What sizes do your neckless glass globes come in?

Our neckless globe shades are available in 6-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch, 12-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch diameters. Smaller globes work well for compact pendants and dense multi-light arrangements, while larger globes create more visual impact in foyers, stairways and rooms with high ceilings.

What finishes are available for the globe covers?

Neckless globe covers are available in black, brass, antique brass, nickel and white. The cover can coordinate with the socket, canopy, chain or other metal details used throughout the fixture.

What is the difference between clear, frosted, opal and milk glass globes?

Clear glass shows the bulb and produces the most open, transparent appearance. Frosted glass has a matte or etched surface that softens the light while remaining somewhat translucent. Opal glass, milk glass and white glass are often overlapping terms for white glass that conceals the bulb and creates a more even, diffused glow.

Can I use different bulb styles inside a clear globe?

Yes. Clear globes allow the bulb to become part of the design, so bulb shape and color matter. Depending on the fixture and globe size, options may include clear LED bulbs, amber bulbs, filament bulbs, tube bulbs or other decorative shapes.

What type of bulb should I use inside a white glass globe?

We recommend a frosted white bulb inside a white or opal glass globe. A clear bulb can create visible shadows, bright spots and uneven areas on the glass because the individual filaments and internal components show through the shade. A frosted bulb diffuses the light before it reaches the globe, creating a smoother, more evenly illuminated appearance.
